Wine Wednesday: Schulz, 2012 Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley

As you may know, since the very beginning the girl & the fig has offered an exclusively “Rhône-alone” wine list. We’ve always loved that featuring unique wines gives us an opportunity to begin a conversation with our guests, perhaps introduce them to something new, as well as to present talented and innovative producers we believe in.

This Week: Schulz, 2012 Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley

About Schulz:

With over 40 years of combined experience in the wine industry, Michele and John Schulz founded Schulz Cellars in 2005. Today, Schulz Cellars is a family-owned winery that seeks to produce high quality wines that reflect each of their vineyard sites. In 2005 they released their first commercial bottle of Syrah from the Fortunate Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District.

Tasting Notes:

The '12 Syrah has leading flavors of red raspberry, red currents, blackberries, and black pepper, with a hint of anise. The deep clay loam soils of the Oak Knoll District allow for the production of a rich and complex Syrah. Spending 24 months in the barrel, these flavors make for a deep, rich Syrah with solid acidity and a lingering finish that can be enjoyed now or in a few years from now.

Pairings:

At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing the Schulz, 2012 Oak Knoll District Syrah with the crisp pork belly sandwich (duck liver mousse, pickled vegetables, mint, greens, frites), grilled octopus (chorizo, potatoes, roasted peppers, lemon aiolo) and goat cheeses.

At home enjoy with lamb, carrot salad, and dark fruit.

Cheers!
