This Week: Cochon, 2016 Old Vine Rosé , Sonoma Valley
With a passion for wines from the Rhone Valley in the South of France and the Northern Iberian Peninsula, longtime friends Adam Webb and Mike Kuenz bought their first grapes in 2004 from an Old Vine Grenache vineyard in Amador County. Today, Cochon focuses on creating California Rhone wines using large, French Oak barrels commonly used in the Rhone Valley. The unique shape of the Hogshead barrels that Cochon uses allows them to create a rounder, softer, and more elegant rosé. With cochon being the French word for hog, these Hogshead barrels are also the inspiration behind the Cochon Wines name.
The salmon colored ’16 Old Vine Rosé is notable for its pure and refreshing aromatic intensity and complexity. This is a light to medium bodied rosé with a soft and rounded silky texture. With aromas of stone fruits, citrus blossom, wild berry, and ruby grapefruit, the flavors of white peach, strawberry, and grapefruit come together for a vivid and focused finish.
At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing Cochon, 2016 Old Vine Rosé with quiche lorraine, grilled asparagus (strawberries, goat cheese, arugula, & champagne vinaigrette) and rich cheeses.
